The National Disability Institute (NDI) Board of Directors is conducting a search for NDI’s next Executive Director.
Founded in 2005 and based in Washington D.C., National Disability Institute is the first and only national organization exclusively focused on the financial health and wellness of people with disabilities. A unique and continually evolving approach allows NDI to be influential and to change behavior and policy at a local, state and national level. One in four people with disabilities lives in poverty and faces barriers that hinder their access to employment, education, skills development, financial services and full participation in their communities. NDI’s mission is to change that status quo.
NDI is an expert at building strong partnerships and collaboration among all stakeholders across both the public and private sectors, including people with disabilities, government and financial institutions, community nonprofits and institutions of higher education. NDI does not have chapters or paid memberships, but with partners, the organization touches over a million people a year through research, training, technical assistance, demonstrations and public policy development. NDI empowers individuals with disabilities and their families to earn more, save more, set and reach financial goals that can reduce their dependence on public benefits and be valued contributors to inclusive communities.
The NDI Board of Directors is looking for a talented executive with a proven track record as a disruptive innovator and a depth of knowledge and experience. With the mission of driving long-term and systemic change for the disability community, the Executive Director will lead the talented NDI staff of 36 to:
- conduct cutting-edge research that informs the baseline of knowledge about the financial behavior of people with disabilities
- advance training, curriculum and technical assistance that integrate financial and benefits counseling
- strengthen existing and build new partnerships with a multitude of organizations in the financial community, disability nonprofits and other community groups at the local, state and national level to change thinking, strategies and behaviors and collaborate with those partners to develop solutions that will advance those with disabilities out of poverty
- engage policy makers, law makers and regulators at multiple levels to rethink ways to increase financial stability and security for individuals with disabilities and their families.

- Experience in an executive or senior leadership role at an entity of a scale, function, and/or complexity similar to that of NDI, in the nonprofit, private or public sector.
- A demonstrated commitment to and proven competency in one or more fields supporting financial empowerment and wealth building for low-income individuals and/or families, particularly with disabilities, including, but not limited to: savings and asset building, consumer finance, inclusive community development, financial counseling, workforce development and/or policy development.
- Success working with and motivating a diverse staff, including those who are remotely located.
- Experience working with nonprofit Boards.
- Demonstrated success convening and driving collaboration across stakeholders from a wide array of backgrounds, public and private sectors and experiences.
- Proven understanding of the federal, state and local governments’ approach to policy development and implementation that drive employment and financial inclusion for the disability community.
- Successful experience framing, developing, funding and implementing mission-aligned projects with a broad range of partners.
- Effective leadership and strong communications skills.
- Relevant lived experience that informs a personal understanding of NDI’s mission and that will enrich NDI’s work.
- Education experience: Bachelor degree required, post-baccalaureate degree strongly preferred.
- Professional experience: 10+ years relevant professional experience.
- Full-time presence in Washington, D.C.
